The Dept. of Ophthalmology, AIIMS, Nagpur actively participated in the NATIONAL DISABILITY DAY celebrations observed on 3rd December 2021 in collaboration with the Departments of PMR, ENT and Psychiatry. This talk was a part of the online CME for medical professionals and care-givers, which was relayed live through the YouTube platform. On this occasion, a talk on ‘Looking at disability in the eye’ was delivered by Dr. Purvasha Narang, Associate Professor.
The various implications, management options and the role of Low Vision Aids for Vision Impairment and blindness in children as well as in adults were discussed. Medical, psychosocial, educational, vocational and community- based rehabilitation modalities were elaborated upon, along with the need of independent living skills training, Genetic counseling, gene therapy and formation of patient Support groups. Co-operation of NGOs was emphasized upon.
The Dept. of Ophthalmology, AIIMS, Nagpur runs a Disability Board for UDID certification and is the only AIIMS to be designated as the is poised to start the Low vision aids and rehabilitation services soon for patients with Disability.
