AIIMS Nagpur lend a helping hand for “KUTUHAL”, a health education exhibition

KutuhalThe Department of Physiology, AIIMS, Nagpur under the leadership of Dr Mrunal Phatak, Professor & Head, Physiology, AIIMS, Nagpur and guidance of Director Maj Gen.(Dr) Vibha Dutta accepted the challenge to train the 1st year MBBS students for “KUTUHAL”. KUTUHAL literally meaning ‘curiosity’ was an educational health exhibition jointly organized by VNIT, Vigyan Bharati, Indian Medical Association and National Cancer Institute from 9th to 11th February, 2019 at VNIT, Nagpur. Four stalls were established depicting the role of physiologist to the general public under the headings of Teaching, Animal research, Human research and Patient care. Tremendous response by the general public was seen on all three days of the exhibition. The newspapers were flooded with pictures next day quoting the extreme demand for the Physiology stalls of AIIMS Nagpur . The zebra fish model planned by Dr Hardy Daniel and Cognitive & Personality tests planned by Dr Ashlesh Patil were instant hits. Other teaching & patient care stalls planned by Dr Jyotsana Gumasta, Dr Vinu Vij, Dr Smita Sorte and Dr Prathamesh Kamble also gained a lot attention.

The entire batch of 1st year MBBS students was involved in the exhibition. Some students taught the function of heart, lungs, ear and brain with the use of models & charts. While, few others demonstrated the techniques to measure blood pressure and find the blood groups to the general public. Cognitive games and learning tricks were also taken by few students that gained the attention of children as well as college students. More than 1000 Personality test forms were filled by people that have helped in spreading social awareness and initiated self-reflection regarding the human brain function. Elaborate discussions were undertaken with general public on diseases like AIDS, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Emerging patient care techniques like intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and impedance oscillometry (pulmonary function tests) were succinctly explained by the students.

The organizing committee was overwhelmed with the efforts of the AIIMS Nagpur students. Thus they invited one representative student from AIIMS, Nagpur to share his experience during the valedictory function that was Anuj Sharma, he shared his experiences on the stage. He appreciated the KUTUHAL initiative as it offered the students a chance to interact with common people and understand their grievances. It also provided an opportunity for them to interact with engineering and other medical college students. Moreover, this event has enhanced the confidence among students while encountering the common people as well as helped them reach the highest level in the educational pyramid i.e. ability to teach.

Students of AIIMS Nagpur were winners of health awareness quiz conducted at KUTUHAL.
