AIIMS Nagpur Performs First PIPAC Procedure on Gastric Cancer Patient IN SURGICAL ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT

 AIIMS Nagpur achieved a historic milestone by successfully performing its first Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) procedure on a 55-year-old gastric cancer patient with peritoneal metastasis.

The procedure was led by Dr. Neelesh Shrivastava, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgical Oncology, in collaboration with Dr. Revanth C. from the Department of Anaesthesia, under the guidance of Dr. Gajanan Chavhan, Head of Department, Anaesthesia.

Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. PIPAC delivers chemotherapy as a pressurized aerosol directly into the abdomen, offering targeted treatment with fewer side effects than conventional chemotherapy. This milestone reinforces AIIMS Nagpur's position at the forefront of medical innovation in India.

Nagpur: The Department of Orthopedics at AIIMS Nagpur has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing 1,000 arthroplasty (joint replacement) surgeries in last four years, marking a new chapter in providing advanced, affordable, and high-quality joint replacement care to patients from Central India and beyond. Among these 1,000 procedures, around 20 joint replacement surgeries were successfully performed using the advanced Robotic Joint Replacement System, enabling greater surgical precision and improved patient outcomes.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. P.P. Joshi, Executive Director& CEO, AIIMS Nagpur, said that successful completion of 1,000 joint replacement surgeries is a proud milestone for AIIMS Nagpur and reflects our commitment to delivering world-class, affordable Orthopaedic care. Dr. Samir Dwidmuthe, Professor & Head, Department of Orthopaedics, stated that, “The accomplishment is the result of the dedicated efforts of the entire arthroplasty team comprising Dr Saurabh Sah, Dr. Ankush Mohabey, Dr. Prashant Bhavani, Dr. Amol Dubepuria, and Dr. Mukund Madhav Ojha, along with the invaluable support of Anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, physiotherapists, operation theatre personnel, and hospital administration.”

Dr. Saurabh Sah, In-charge Joint replacement services said that, “As we move forward, our focus will remain on adopting evidence-based innovations, strengthening training and research, and making advanced joint replacement—including robotic surgery—accessible for all patients.”

Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, Nodal Officer, PMJAY scheme, stated that, over 80% of these complex procedures were performed completely free of cost under the PMJAY and government welfare schemes, making cutting-edge robotic technology accessible to economically disadvantaged patients.

AIIMS Nagpur Hosts Nagpur Orthopaedics Post Graduate PG Training Course 2026

The Department of Orthopaedics, AIIMS Nagpur in association with Trauma Society of India, Nagpur Trauma foundation, under the aegis of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), successfully conducted the prestigious Nagpur PG Teaching Course 2026 from June 4–6, 2026 at Auditorium, AIIMS, Nagpur. The three-day academic event witnessed participation from more than 490 postgraduate students and young orthopaedic surgeons representing medical colleges and institutions from across the country. This is the largest Orthopaedics Post graduate training program held in India so far.

The course was designed to provide intensive examination-oriented training for postgraduate residents through long-case and short-case discussions, clinical examination demonstrations, viva voce sessions, case-based learning, and expert lectures delivered by renowned orthopaedic teachers and examiners.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Nagpur, along with senior faculty members and distinguished orthopaedic surgeons from across India.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Nagpur, said: "AIIMS Nagpur remains committed to academic excellence and capacity building. Such national-level teaching courses provide an invaluable opportunity for young orthopaedic surgeons to learn from experienced faculty and enhance their clinical competence."

Course Chairman Dr. Sushrut Babhulkar emphasized the importance of structured clinical training and stated that:" The overwhelming response from participants reflects the continuing need for such focused academic initiatives." Dr Nitin Kimmatkar, Dr. Ashutosh Apte, Dr A K Pal, Dr Sumedh Chaudhary, Dr Amol Kadu, Dr Amol Patil graced the inauguration ceremony.

The course convener Dr. Samir Dwidmuthe, Professor & Head, Dept. of Orthopaedics, AIIMS Nagpur, highlighted that the program was carefully designed to simulate practical examination scenarios and provide direct interaction with experienced examiners and said that, "The objective of this course is not merely examination preparation but also the development of sound clinical judgment and patient-centered orthopaedic practice."

The event brought together leading academicians (8 national and 12 regional), committed to strengthening postgraduate orthopaedic education.

Participants appreciated the opportunity to engage in detailed clinical discussions, mock examinations, and evidence-based management sessions covering various subspecialties of orthopaedics. Twenty five different clinical cases were presented by post graduate students, generating a useful discussion.

Dr. Saurabh Sah, Dr. Sitanshu Barik were the organizing secretaries for the program. The organizing team included Dr. Ankush Mohabey, Dr Prashant Bhavani, Dr. Amol Dubepuria, Dr. Rajesh Meena, Dr. Nikhil Goyal, who coordinated the academic and logistical arrangements for the event.

The event concluded with a valedictory session and prize distribution ceremony, with participants expressing appreciation for the high academic standards and practical relevance of the course. The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to continuing similar educational initiatives aimed at enhancing orthopaedic training and healthcare delivery in India.

AIIMS Nagpur Conducts Tobacco Cessation and Capacity-Building Workshop at Bela PHC
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Tobacco Cessation Clinic (TCC) of AIIMS Nagpur successfully organised an awareness and capacity-building program at the Bela Primary Health Centre (PHC) on May 29, 2026.
The TCC, which operates under the National Tobacco Control Programme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, is jointly managed by the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Community Medicine at AIIMS Nagpur.
The training workshop was led by Dr. Gaurav Singh, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He educated healthcare workers on public health strategies, focusing on the hazards of tobacco consumption and the critical need for cessation. The program also featured a specialised skill-building exercise designed to train workers in tobacco screening and evidence-based primary interventions for tobacco dependence syndrome.
Throughout the day, a series of awareness lectures, counselling sessions, and educational activities focused on preventing and treating tobacco addiction were successfully executed.
The initiative was conducted under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Nagpur. Dr Joshi congratulated the teams from the Departments of Psychiatry and Community Medicine for their impactful community outreach. He emphasised that tobacco use is highly preventable and underscored the urgent need to protect community health from its devastating effects.

The Department of Psychiatry AIIMS Nagpur with Tele- MANAS Mentoring unit conducted an awareness Program on the occasion of World Schizophrenia Day 2026 on 25th May2026. The Chief Guest of this program was the Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. Joshi and the Guest of Honor was Dr. Nilesh Nagdeve, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS Nagpur.

Prof. (Dr.) Prashant P. Joshi addressed the crowd by educating them about schizophrenia, the stigma related to it and the importance of seeking timely treatment. He also felicitated the patients with Schizophrenia who were adherent to the medicines, showed resilience and recovered and stated that “Despite multiple challenges, the support of family members and the proper treatment contribute to the journey of recovery.”  The program was then carried forward by psychoeducation of schizophrenia, reasons of hospitalization and managing negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The program was attended by several patients and their caregivers.

In the “voices of the recovery” space was given to patients and their caregivers to express their journey of recovery, hurdles faced by them and how they cope up through the illness. One of the patients stated that “family support and adequate treatment aided me in rebuilding my life as I understood the importance of treatment and gained confidence in daily activity”. Another patient expressed his gratitude towards AIIMS Nagpur for aiding his recovery, helping him redirect his confidence and achieve professional growth.

The program was concluded by clearing doubts of the patients and their caregivers and the psychiatry department gave assurance that they will provide the necessary treatment facility and best care to the patients. Patients and caregivers were also given information about Tele- MANAS services to address any of the mental health concerns.
