The Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS Nagpur, in collaboration with the IPS-LGBTQ Task Force and The Nagpur Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (NOGS) , successfully organized a symposium titled "Inclusive Excellence: Understanding LGBTQIA++." on June 22, 2024, at the IPD Lecture Hall, AIIMS Nagpur.
The symposium aimed to promote understanding and inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ individuals within the healthcare system, addressing the disparities in health access and treatment that this community often faces. The event featured a distinguished line-up of speakers and was attended by a diverse group of students, faculty, and healthcare professionals.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr Suyog V. Jaiswal, Additional Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS Nagpur. This was followed by an address from Dr. Niti Spare, Secretary, NOGS, and an address by the Guest of Honor, Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS Nagpur. Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, served as the Chief Guest and delivered an insightful address, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in healthcare.
Key presentations included: LGBTQ: The Basics" by Dr Surabhi Mitra, Convenor of the LGBTQ Task Force, IPS. "The Indian Culture and LGBTQ" by Mr. Ankit Bhuptani, Founder of the Queer Hindu Alliance, delivered virtually and "Healthcare Access for LGBTQ"** by Ms. Shradha Joshi, Director of the NGO, Mission Vishwa Mamatwa Foundation.
A panel discussion ‘ Caring with Pride’ moderated by Dr Sonakshi Jyrwa, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS Nagpur, concluded the event. Panelists included Dr Parul Saoji, AMOGS YTP Committee Chairperson for 2024-2026; Dr. Surbhi Mitra; Ms. Shradha Joshi and Dr Suyog V. Jaiswal. The discussion addressed healthcare disparities in the LGBTQIA+ community with a focus on health needs, education, training, policies, practices, legal and ethical considerations, and need for community engagement and advocacy. The discussion provided an interactive platform for the audience to engage with the experts on various aspects of LGBTQIA+ health and inclusivity. The event concluded with formal Vote of Thanks by Dr Sreelakshmi V, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, AIIMS Nagpur.
This symposium is a testament to AIIMS Nagpur's commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable healthcare environment for all individuals, irrespective of their gender or sexual orientation.
