Introduction

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur is an Institute of National Importance established by the Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) with the objective of correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable tertiary healthcare and strengthening high-quality medical education and research across the country.

Located in the MIHAN (Multi-modal International Hub Airport at Nagpur) area, AIIMS Nagpur serves as a major tertiary healthcare, academic, and research hub for Central India, particularly for the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and neighbouring states.

The institute began its academic and clinical journey in 2018 from the Government Medical College campus in Nagpur, subsequently shifting to its permanent campus at MIHAN in September 2019, where outpatient services were expanded. Inpatient services commenced in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, marking a crucial phase in the institute’s rapid growth. The institute was dedicated to the nation on 11 December 2022 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, marking an important milestone in its institutional development. 

Today, AIIMS Nagpur is steadily evolving into a comprehensive centre of excellence integrating patient care, medical education, research, innovation, and community health outreach.

Healthcare Services

AIIMS Nagpur provides comprehensive tertiary healthcare services supported by multidisciplinary teams of specialists, advanced diagnostics, and modern hospital infrastructure.

The institute currently has:

• 940 functional hospital beds
• 110 intensive care beds across specialized ICUs including MICU, SICU, NICU, PICU, CTVS ICU, Kidney Transplant Unit and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit
• 19 functional modular operation theatres

The hospital serves a large patient population with:

• 3,500–4,000 outpatient visits daily
• 100–120 emergency patients per day
• 100–120 admissions daily
• 40–45 major surgeries performed every day

The hospital consistently maintains bed occupancy rates close to 99%, reflecting the trust placed in the institution by patients across the region. Since inception, the institute has treated over 25 lakh outpatients and more than 1 lakh admitted patients, demonstrating its growing role as a major referral centre in Central India.

The institute has also successfully facilitated donation after circulatory death (DCD) and expanded deceased donor transplantation programs.

In recognition of its contributions, AIIMS Nagpur received the National Award from NOTTO (MoHFW, Government of India) as the “Best Emerging Government Institution in Organ Donation and Transplantation.”

The institute also performs complex and advanced procedures such as:

• Cytoreductive Surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) for rare peritoneal malignancies
