Department of General Medicine is the backbone of clinical departments of this institute. It was established in 2019, is headed by Dr Prashant P Joshi, Professor of General Medicine. It is the first contact for patients with physical ailments and medical emergencies. We endeavour to provide advanced healthcare to patients, excellence in education, innovation and research. We are committed to diagnose, treat and prevent all the common and uncommon medical diseases. The art and science of medicine is practiced through evidence-based medicine, enhancing the patient satisfaction and outcomes. We have 8 faculty members who are actively involved in Patient Care, Teaching and Research. The department provides emergency care to all patients 24x7. The OPD attendance of the department has shown a linear increase and is around 300 per day. The department now has fully functional IPD services with 50 indoor beds, with more than 100% occupancy. The department has State of the art 22 bedded Medical Intensive Care Unit to manage critically ill patients with 15 functional beds and other beds to be opened in a stepwise manner. The ICU is equipped with all the modern equipment’s like Invasive and Non-invasive ventilators, syringe and infusion pumps, defibrillator, ECG machine, Monitors with facility for Intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring and ET Co2 monitoring. The central monitoring system is being procured.
The department has an isolation ward and faculty has been actively involved in the management of patients with COVID-19 and H1N1 (Swine flu) infection both in IPD, screening OPD and Post-COVID OPD during all the three waves. The department has been actively involved in organising and participating health check-up camps.
Department of Medicine started offering postgraduate course in Medicine (MD Medicine) from August 2021. Till date 9 students have got registered for the M.D. Medicine course. Postgraduate teaching activity (Seminars, Case presentations, Thesis review, Journal Club and bedside teaching), Under Graduate training (Lectures, Clinics, Tutorials, and Integrated Teaching program) is being done on a regular basis by the faculty. There is no dearth of clinical material in the department and variety of patients of all systems are always available for teaching. The department uses both small group and large group methods of teaching for undergraduates.
In the departmental skill lab, we have a state of art “Comprehensive Cardiovascular Examination and Chest and Lung Examination Simulator", which is boon to teach students, especially during COVID pandemic with frequent lockdowns.
The faculty are actively involved in research and there are around 20 Research Projects / Clinical trials which are on-going or have been completed in the Medicine department. 19 Research articles have been published by the Medicine faculty in indexed journals. The faculty have participated in several conferences, workshops, CMEs, Symposia in both in online and offline format and have delivered guest lectures.
