Department of Microbiology was established in September 2019 at All India Institute of Medical Science, Nagpur, and started giving its Diagnostic services soon after its establishment. Department of Microbiology consists of Bacteriology, Serology, Mycology, Parasitology, Mycobacteriology and Virology sections. The Department plays vital roles in teaching & training undergraduates, postgraduates and nursing students, and providing quality diagnostic laboratory services & research activities.
The State-of-Art Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory for COVID – 19 testing was set up in record time of 10 days in April 2020 and till date has not only tested more than 4,17,000 samples but it received special recognition from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) by being designated as the Inter Laboratory Quality Control (ILQC) laboratory for entire Maharashtra along with National Institute of Virology (NIV) selected as the Regional Surveillance centre. The Department of Microbiology was also instrumental in simultaneously providing training to more than 300 Microbiologists, Pathologists and Laboratory Technicians for RT-PCR testing. From April 2021 to March 2022, 2,91,166 COVID-19 samples tested. The Diagnostic Molecular Laboratory has recently been recognized as Regional Centre for surveillance of ILI (Influenza Like Illness)/SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) along with responsibility of Testing, Training, Mentoring and will be instrumental in doing the tissue culture and antiviral drug susceptibility testing.
The Laboratory has State-of- art Biofire Microfilm array with the help of which more than 200 samples from entire Vidarbha region were tested for ILI/SARI patients during the COVID-19 Pandemic in coordination with the Hon’ble Divisional Commissioner, Nagpur District and Hon’ble Collector, Amravati District.
Department has started its state of art Genomic sequencing laboratory for sequencing of COVID-19 samples in June 2022. It is also acting as a Training Hub for entire Maharashtra in providing training on PCR.
Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), AIIMS, Nagpur has been selected as the Regional Surveillance Centre for Monkeypox testing among 15 Nodal centres in the country by Centre for Disease Control , Ministry of Health and Family Welfare , New Delhi.
The Department of Microbiology got recognized as State Reference Laboratoryfor Integrated Disease Surveillance and Training Programme (IDSP) for Nagpur, Gondia and adjoining Districts. The Department has facilities for testing Various Viral infections e.g. Zika Virus, Herpes virus, Dengue virus, Chikungunya virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Hepatitis viruses, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
The integrated counseling and Testing Centre in collaboration with Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) and National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) became functional in October 2019. Now the status of Stand-alone ICTC was awarded to AIIMS, Nagpur for HIV testing.
Apart from diagnosis, Microbiology laboratory plays an important role in Surveillance of hospital acquired infections, Antibiotic policy and stewardship, Investigations of outbreaks of various infectious diseases.
The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory in IPD became functional on 03/08/2022. The Department regularly participates in EQAS programme on Bacteriology and Serology, conducted by CMC Vellore.
The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory also participated in EQAS thrice, with NIV Pune under ICMR for RT-PCR of COVID-19 and had 100% concordance all three times.
