International Women’s Day Programme -Felicitation of Women Kidney Donors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur
Nagpur: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a special program was organized at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur on 10th march 2026 to honour women who have selflessly donated their kidneys to give a new life to their loved ones. The event celebrated the spirit of sacrifice, compassion, and courage demonstrated by these women donors.
Addressing the gathering, the Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Nagpur, Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, emphasized the remarkable role played by women in saving lives through organ donation. He informed that till date a out of the total 55 renal transplants performed 21 live renal transplants have been successfully performed at AIIMS Nagpur. Out of these, 15 donors were female and 6 were male, reflecting the immense contribution of women in supporting organ transplantation within families. He further mentioned that while this highlights the strength and sacrifice of women in our society, efforts should also be made to minimize this gender imbalance and encourage equal participation from all sections of society.
During the program, kidney donor Mrs. Sushma Chahare shared her heartfelt testimonial. She expressed great satisfaction with the care and treatment provided at AIIMS Nagpur and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the hospital’s doctors, nursing officers, and staff.
Earlier, Dr. Manish Shrigiriwar, Nodal Officer for Organ Donation and Transplant Services as well as Nodal Officer for MJPJAY and PMJAY schemes, spoke about the importance of organ donation awareness. He emphasized the need for continuous public awareness and sensitization so that more people come forward to support organ donation and transplantation, ultimately saving more lives. He also highlighted that all successful kidney transplants at AIIMS Nagpur have been carried out under the MJPJAY and PMJAY schemes, making the treatment accessible and affordable for patients in need.
During the event, Dr. Amol Bhawane, In-charge of the Kidney Transplant Unit, provided valuable guidance to the participants regarding post-transplant care, medication adherence, regular follow-up, and lifestyle modifications necessary for maintaining long-term transplant success.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Chandrakant Munjewar, Associate Professor and In-charge of the Urology Department, who expressed gratitude to all participants, donors, doctors, and staff members who contributed to the success of the event.
The program was attended in large numbers by live kidney transplant donors along with their families, prospective live renal transplant patients, and patients undergoing dialysis, making the event a meaningful platform for interaction, awareness, and encouragement for organ donation.
The program was successfully organized with the major contribution of Transplant Coordinators Mr. Gajanan Gitte, Ms. Pooja Sulania, and Mrs. Divya Gaigole. The event was smoothly conducted and anchored by Ms. Geeta Supriya.
The event served as an inspiring platform to recognize women donors and to spread awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation.
