Rare Surgery Successfully Performed at AIIMS Nagpur: A Milestone in Medical Excellence

Nagpur, 1st April 2025 : AIIMS Nagpur has set a new benchmark in the field of medical science with the successful completion of a rare and complex surgery. The highly specialized procedure was carried out by a team of experienced surgeons, offering hope and a new lease of life to the patient.

A 23 year young Man, was suffering from Extra testicular Non-Seminomatous Germ cell tumour with extensive involvement abdominal Organs since June 2024. He has received chemotherapy for the same and most of the disease was well responded; however during the chemotherapy patient developed haemoptysis (blood in cough). The CT SCAN revealed a large residual tumour arising from right lobe of liver extending through diaphragm and infiltrating right lower lobe of lung. The doctors inferred that, this is the reason for the haemoptysis. As required chemotherapy was already given and patient was losing a lot of blood through cough; surgical intervention was the only solution. Considering the extensiveness of the tumor, the patient would have required excision of right half of liver with diaphragm along with lower lobe of right lung. However, most of the surgeons across the cities refused for such a major surgical resection. Hence the patient was referred to the Dept. of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS Nagpur. Dr Shubhada Khanapure, Associate professor Dept. of Surgical Oncology studied the case thoroughly and after deliberation with experts precisely planned the management.

The team at AIIMS Nagpur, led by Dr Shubhada Khanapure, flawlessly excised the right lobe of liver, diseased diaphragm and right lower lobe of lung in toto, marking a significant milestone in the hospital's mission to provide world-class healthcare. Dr. Jaykumar, Dr. Nirjhar Raj, Dr. Hemant Bodhankar and Dr. Neelesh Shrivastav and Dr. Nilesh Nagdeve played a vital role during surgery.   A team of skilled anaesthetists lead by Dr. Gajanan Chavan, Dr. Revanth and critical care specialist Dr. Suchita Meshram has managed the patient effectively.
