The Department of Orthopaedics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, successfully organized the Basic Knee Arthroplasty Workshop (BKAW 2026) on 15th February 2026 at the IPD Lecture Hall, AIIMS Nagpur. The academic program was conducted under the aegis of the Vidarbha Orthopaedics Society Nagpur and Arthroplasty Association Nagpur.
The workshop was designed to provide comprehensive training in total knee Joint Replacement (TKA), focusing on fundamental principles, surgical approaches, implant design philosophy, pre-operative planning, and management of complex knee deformities. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate students, and practicing clinicians from Nagpur and surrounding regions.
The program was graced by the Chief Patron, Dr. Prof. P. P. Joshi, Executive Director, AIIMS Nagpur. The organizing leadership included Dr. Samir Dwidmuthe, Professor & Head, Department of Orthopaedics, and Organising Chairman Dr. Saurabh Sah. The workshop was meticulously coordinated by the Organising Secretary, Dr. Ankush Mohabey, Dr Sitanshu Barik, Dr Prashant Bhavani, Dr Amol Dubepuria and Dr Mukund Madhav Ojha. Dr. Ashish Thakur and Dr. Subramanian were present representing the Vidarbha Orthopaedic Society, Nagpur, and the Arthroplasty Association, Nagpur.
AIIMS Nagpur has emerged as a growing center for joint replacement surgery, having performed over 400 total knee arthroplasties and 450 total hip arthroplasties to date, including an increasing number of robotic-assisted total knee replacements (Robotic TKR). Additionally, the department has successfully performed custom megaprosthesis knee joint replacements in patients with Giant Cell Tumour around the knee, with five such patients benefitting from this advanced limb salvage surgery. The institute continues to expand its joint replacement services with a focus on precision surgery, technology integration, and improved patient outcomes.
The scientific sessions commenced with deliberations on clinical assessment of patients undergoing TKA, implant design philosophy, pre-operative planning, and operating theatre setup. Surgical approaches including medial parapatellar and sub-vastus techniques were discussed in detail. Experts also highlighted jig-based rotational alignment, AP referencing in TKR, and surgical strategies for varus and valgus knees, including both posterior stabilized and cruciate retaining techniques.
A special focus was given to managing flexion deformity, pain management protocols, and the emerging CPAK classification. A key highlight of the workshop was the hands-on Saw Bone Workshop, where participants practiced bone cuts, component positioning, and alignment techniques under expert supervision. This practical session provided valuable exposure to real-time surgical steps in a simulated environment, allowing participants to refine their technical skills before applying them in the operating theatre. The interactive case discussions further enriched learning through problem-based clinical scenarios.
The inauguration ceremony was held at 10:30 AM, marking the formal commencement of the academic event.
Speaking on the occasion, the organizers emphasized the importance of structured training in arthroplasty to enhance surgical precision, optimize patient outcomes, and promote evidence-based orthopaedic practice.
The Basic Knee Arthroplasty Workshop reflects AIIMS Nagpur’s continued commitment to academic excellence, skill enhancement, and advancement in joint replacement surgery.
