All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur

Inauguration of State-of-the-Art Diabetic Foot Analysis Lab

AIIMS Nagpur is proud to announce the inauguration of a cutting-edge Diabetic Foot Analysis Laboratory, the first of its kind service available at government setup in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It is a significant step towards advancing healthcare services for diabetic patients of the region suffering from foot ulcers and their complications.

The lab was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Prashant Joshi, Executive Director, AIIMS Nagpur, in the esteemed presence of Dr Seema Parvekar, Medical Superintendent and other heads of the department of the institute.

Speaking at the inauguration, Executive Director and CEO AIIMS Nagpur Prof Dr. Prashant Joshi said “The epidemic of diabetes is escalating in India due to changing lifestyle. Diabetic foot disorders is a common complication due to peripheral vascular ischemia, peripheral nerve injury and secondary infection. It is also one of the leading cause of amputation and disability in adults. Early detection and prevention is essential to reduce these complications. With this state-of-the-art facility, AIIMS Nagpur dedicated to provide high quality patient care services to Nagpur and Vidharbh region.

The newly inaugurated Diabetic Foot Analysis Lab is equipped with advanced technologies designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of foot health for diabetic patients. Key features of this lab are:

Foot Pressure Analysis machine: This technology enables detailed analysis of foot pressure distribution, identifying high-pressure areas that could potentially develop into ulcers or calluses. By understanding these patterns, customized preventive and therapeutic measures can be implemented.

Peripheral Blood Flow Analysis: Utilizing non-invasive techniques, the lab can assess blood flow in the lower extremities through an automated ankle brachial index calculator machine, transcutaneous partial pressure oxygen measurement machine and hand held vascular Doppler. Availability of these modern machines are crucial for identifying ischemic conditions that are often associated with diabetes and can lead to delayed wound healing and subsequent amputations.

Neuropathy Analysis: The lab is equipped to evaluate the extent of peripheral neuropathy, a condition which is common in diabetic patients which reduces sensation in the feet, making patients susceptible to unnoticed injuries and infections. Early detection of neuropathy can help in timely intervention and management.

Detailed clinical evaluation, medical and surgical treatment: availability of modern techniques of management of diabetic foot ulcers like use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and other dressing materials for the treatment of foot ulcers, use of various offloading techniques like total contact casting, customized insole and footwear modification etc.

Dr Seema Parvekar, Medical superintendent AIIMS Nagpur said “The need for comprehensive diabetic foot care is essential to reduce the growing burden of preventable complications and improve quality of life for patients.”

Dr Swapnil Sonune, Associate Professor and HOD, Department of PMR said- “The advanced diagnostic tools in the lab will enable early detection and timely interventions, minimizing the risk of severe outcomes such as amputations”.

Dr Harshanand Popalwar, Associate Professor and diabetic foot clinic in charge said- “India is becoming the diabetes capital of the world and so the complications of diabetic foot are going to rise.
